[00:00:00] Kim Daly: Foreign. Welcome back to create well through Franchising podcast and Kim Daily tv. In my studio today, one of my rock stars, Z Sweet students. A man who's just. I want to hug him every time I see him. This man's life has just changed in so many different ways. I am so excited for him to share his story with all, all of you. Dan Spellman of New London County, Connecticut, Bloomin Blinds franchisee, welcome to the studio of Daily tv. [00:00:39] Dan Spellman: Thank you. Always great to see you. Always. [00:00:42] Kim Daly: This is gonna be a good one for all of you out there who say things like, I don't know if I can be successful, who say a lot of the things. I'm just gonna leave it at that. We're not going to plant any seeds. I think I've heard a lot of those things from this man over the five, six months. How many months have I known you now? Seven months I've known this man. [00:01:00] Dan Spellman: Yeah. [00:01:01] Kim Daly: So let's start at the beginning of your story, though, Dan, which I'm not even sure I know. Let's go to what was happening in your life when you decided, I want to build cash flow. I own and control. And you selected Bloomin Blinds. [00:01:16] Dan Spellman: So I worked for one of the largest, largest furniture retailers in the northeast for, like, 13 or 14 years. And I was always, you know, a high performer there, but there was always a ceiling to it because I didn't understand. I didn't understand what I understand from you through this work now, because I could have applied it to that, but. And I got bored. I. I was going to work. I didn't. I was waking up, not wanting to go to work. And I'm not a person that can do that. And I've always had some kind of business. I owned an ice cream stand. I owned a bunch of little things. And I started looking around at Franchising. It was always interesting to me. I looked at a bunch of franchises. All of them were in a hurry to get my check, not in a hurry to tell me how they would support me. And when I stumbled on Bloomin Blinds, I got a different feeling. And they have supported me. They've done the best they can to support me. But I've also been a person that feels like. And I know this is wrong now, but I've always been a person that felt like I could outwork any issue that I had just through hard work. And I know that's not true now. So that's where I. That's where I started. Ooh. [00:02:46] Kim Daly: Anybody out there listening think that you can just outwork all the problems of a business or a job. I love that. That's a human thing. That's not a Dan Spelman thing. We as humans are taught, you know, glory in the grind. And the harder you work, the more successful you're going to be until you come to the Z suite and then you learn something different about how hard work actually hinders true wealth. So. Okay, we're getting ahead of ourselves, though. Okay, so I didn't know that. So in that job, what was the. What was the actual role that you had for the furniture manufacturer? [00:03:18] Dan Spellman: I was a salesperson on the floor. [00:03:20] Kim Daly: Oh, fantastic. Okay. And were you are in your personal life a handy guy? [00:03:27] Dan Spellman: Yeah, always. [00:03:28] Kim Daly: Okay. And did you use a consultant to find Bloomin or did you find it on your own? [00:03:33] Dan Spellman: I found it on my own. [00:03:34] Kim Daly: Okay, very good. Okay. [00:03:36] Dan Spellman: The other thing about this story, though, if I can interrupt is at the same time all of this was going on, I was getting divorced. So I had a lot of emotional stuff going on behind the scenes. Probably wasn't the smartest thing to do to get divorced and start a business at the same time. But, you know, that goes back to that, oh, the hell with it. I can just outwork it. And that's how I started. [00:04:07] Kim Daly: Okay, so, you know what actually is happening when we call in growth, which is what both of those events are, Right. What happens is we call it in. So many people step into their true power when they start asking for growth, Right. All of a sudden you're looking for a job, you can't get a job, and then bam, you've got like 10 people who are dying to get you in the company or, you know, you start looking for the franchise and bam, you get pregnant. Like 24 year franchise consultant. I've seen it all. [00:04:37] Dan Spellman: Yeah. [00:04:38] Kim Daly: You know, people are right there ready to change their life and then their life either falls apart personally, while the growing. Or like, again, you have a baby or there's a death in the family or something that calls you to stand in your power and say, do you really want this? Right. So I think it's good. I mean, it's. It's good. And you survived it all. It's a lot. I've been there myself. I've been through many those kind of moments myself. [00:05:04] Dan Spellman: Yeah. [00:05:04] Kim Daly: Or you're like, I don't know. I'm only one person for all this weight. But we get through it. So when did you become a Bloomin Blinds franchisee? [00:05:13] Dan Spellman: It was early 2023. [00:05:17] Kim Daly: Okay. So we are at the Time of the recording. We are in July of 2026. So you're coming up on about three years. Three or a little more. Three and a half years. [00:05:26] Dan Spellman: Three and a half, yeah. [00:05:28] Kim Daly: Three and a half years. Okay. So, Dan, let's get to, like. Let's talk a little bit about the transition in your skill sets from selling on the floor in a retail scenario to selling in your mobile van and where you were when you found the Z Suite last November. [00:05:46] Dan Spellman: So when I found the Z Suite, we had. We, meaning the franchise had just come through a terrible year. Some part of that terrible year was due to what was happening at the franchise. And so I just said again to myself, well, I'll just outwork those guys. I can do this. But it wasn't happening. And I was feeling very negative and feeling kind of lost and didn't really know where to go, what to do. And running into, you know, your greatness, I'll call. It was just. It was like a godsend to me because it has. I'm probably getting ahead of it, but it has just kind of changed my whole outlook. Not just for my business, but from my personal life, for my life overall. I'm one of those people who said that stuff, that manifestation crap that doesn't work. Who. Who makes that work? I don't know anyone that's made that work. Why would it work for me? And for whatever reason, I said yes to it. But here's the key to it, right, that I believe now is you can say yes to anything, but if you don't do the work, then it doesn't matter, right? I can listen to you for hours, but if I don't go on and do my own stuff and do my own work, it doesn't matter. It doesn't get you anywhere. [00:07:26] Kim Daly: Let's define what that work is compared to. I'll just outwork everybody and make this thing work. What's the work for the listening audience? What's the work that we talk about in the Z Suite? Is it the efforting work, Daniel? [00:07:41] Dan Spellman: No. So it's the. You know, it's getting up in the morning and having a. Having a routine. So, you know, if you work out, work out in the morning, I work out. I can work out in the morning. I work out at night. But, you know, meditating, reading. And I have these big sheets of white paper in my bedroom wall places. And I have my goals all written down. And I read them every morning. Sometimes I read them before I get out of bed, Sometimes I read them after I get out of the shower or whatever. I read them every day. And so it just gives you a path to say, okay, how do I get to those goals? What do I need to do today to get there? [00:08:26] Kim Daly: And how is that different from how you were living before? [00:08:29] Dan Spellman: I would wake up a nervous wreck, drink four cups of coffee, get even more wired, and, you know, hope that leads came in and hope that work came in. That's how it's different today. I know leads are going to come in. They do come in. I know whatever comes in, I'm going to close a large majority of it. [00:08:53] Kim Daly: And how did you get that knowing? How did you build this belief inside of you? [00:08:59] Dan Spellman: You know, it's really. I. I've been having. I knew you were going to ask me that question and that I'm really kind of having a hard time defining how I got there. Other than that, you know, I'm going to be 70 this year. [00:09:14] Kim Daly: Wow, Good for you. [00:09:17] Dan Spellman: So, like, I have all those years previous of not believing any of this stuff could work. Like, this stuff doesn't work. Why would that work for me? I'm like, I'm just a guy that works. Why would any of those things work for me? And I just decided, hey, you know what? Doing what you've done all these years has got you here. Let's try something different. Let's try to believe in something else, and then let's do the work to make it work. [00:09:51] Kim Daly: I'll answer that. I'm like the attorney who never asks the question that I don't know the answer to. So I'll answer the question. I know. I know how it works. So the thoughts that we think every day are just conditioned thoughts because they're the same thoughts we thought yesterday and the day before and the day before. So the way that our. Our mind works, it's just a program, and it's. It's programmed by repetition of the idea. So how you built the new belief was reprogramming your mind with the new belief by waking up every day, reading your goals. Every day, while it may seem trivial, why am I doing this? You what? We repeat our subconscious mind. It's impartial, meaning it doesn't matter whether what we're saying on repeat is positive or negative. It just accepts it. [00:10:46] Dan Spellman: Right? [00:10:46] Kim Daly: And this is the problem, right? We walk around saying, we can't. I'm not capable. Oh, that doesn't happen for someone like me. All the things, right? All of us humans say all the time, but when we say those on repeat, all we're doing is programming ourselves, our subconscious mind, to believe that through repetition. And then the subconscious mind works like a mirror. Because what the subconscious mind believes is. Is emanating as a vibration, as a frequency, by the law of attraction is what we then magnetize back to us, what we attract back. So people are like, no, you don't know me, Kim, because that's what always happens to me. Well, yeah, because if it's your dominant belief deep inside of you, then the only thing the universe can show you is what you believe. So what happened, Dan, is by hanging around Kim Daly and possibility and rich ideas, you started. And having an open mind and doing the work, the daily work. And in the beginning, even Earl Nightingale and my favorite book, the Strangest Secret says this, right? Like in the beginning, you may say these things and you may not even believe them, right? [00:11:58] Dan Spellman: And I do. [00:11:59] Kim Daly: I'm a millionaire or I'm a whatever. Call yourself whatever you want, Right? Right, Dan? [00:12:04] Dan Spellman: Yep. Absolutely. [00:12:06] Kim Daly: But the more you repeat it, what happens? [00:12:10] Dan Spellman: It happens. [00:12:11] Kim Daly: You start to believe it. It was actually Napoleon Hill that's in Think and Grow Rich, and he tells that story. And so all we have to do is reprogram our mind with the rich idea to override the poor idea that we've programmed in the very same way by repeating it and repeating it. So that's how that happened. Okay, so now we're at present day. So you've created a new routine. You're. You're getting absorbed in these rich ideas. You were open to change because you were ready to try something new and tell us some of the things that have started to happen for you, sir. Because it's quite magical from where I'm standing. [00:12:50] Dan Spellman: So, yeah, a lot of stuff has happened, but, you know, one, I just wanted to say this. This one thing first, which was I used to be the guy that if I. If. And it's like it's. It's going to sound trivial to people. But like, you leave the house in the morning, you get a mile away, and you say, damn it, I forgot my whatever. And then that whole mile drive back, I beat the hell out of myself because I forgot it, right? So what I've recognized over the last month or so is those thoughts don't occur to me anymore. I'm giving myself some grace for not being human, but. But for being human. But also, like, when I do a good job, like I had a. I had a job today that was very difficult. And when I was done, I congratulated myself on it. You know, I'm like, good job, Dan. You did a great job there. You know, I never would have said that to myself six months ago. It just never would have happened. So anyway, love. Yeah, so you know, he committed the beginning of the year to doing four networking events a month. [00:14:06] Kim Daly: Oh, and why did you do that, Dan? [00:14:09] Dan Spellman: You told me I had to. [00:14:12] Kim Daly: Because, Because Kim beats it into her students heads. You gotta get off the cocaine addiction of marketing leads. Yes. Yeah. Here ye hear ye business owners listening. If you want to build a business that's predictable and sustainable and totally in your control, you cannot outsource your lead flow to somebody else. Whoever owns your lead flow owns your business. Continue, Dan. [00:14:41] Dan Spellman: You know, it's hard to do. You know, you work hard all day, you got to come home and then go back out again. It's like, oh, God. But I did it and I keep doing it and I have had, I've had some incredible success from it. I, I, I landed a, a huge apartment complex. And really the way I got that job, I drive by it all the time and I said, why not me? Why shouldn't I be the guy that does that? And that's literally the message I left on the person's phone was, I'm a local guy. I drive by your project and I say to myself, why not me? And that's, I think that's how I got the job. Because I think they said to themselves, yeah, why not Dan? He's local, he'll do a good job. So that was the first big job that came from this, which I believe [00:15:40] Kim Daly: was on the sixth ever mark, networking event that you happened to go to. Is that true? In my memory, after the man said to me, when I, you know, said, you got to go out of network. And he said, I can't be Kim Daly. I can't walk into a room and command attention. And I said, dan, I don't need you to be Kim Daly. I need you to be Dan Spellman. [00:15:59] Dan Spellman: And he goes, the reality is, the reality is I can. Exactly, I can walk into a room and command the room. [00:16:09] Kim Daly: Thank you, sir. Thank you. [00:16:13] Dan Spellman: So anyway, and you are. I've done a lot of networking. I've done, I, it's gotten me a lot of work. It continues to get me a lot of work. I have a college dorm that I'm quoting. That's a big, big job. A quote. [00:16:32] Kim Daly: How did that find you? [00:16:35] Dan Spellman: I actually, I actually did the windows in the president of the college's office probably my first year in business. And then like a year and a half ago. I just called the guy who originally contacted me and said, hey, you know, I'm still out here if you need anything. And then he called me like two months ago or a month ago. [00:17:02] Kim Daly: Following up with past clients. Oh, this is a fantastic thing to do. [00:17:09] Dan Spellman: I have a condo complex. The guy called me when I was on a 30 foot ladder today. And I actually answered the phone like a dummy and because I knew it was him and he said, hey, Dan, we're ready to go on that condo complex. I don't know if you sent me a. I can't remember if you sent me a quote. Can you resend it? I said, yes, but I'm going to look over it to make sure prices haven't changed. Fine. So that's 72 windows. [00:17:39] Kim Daly: Amazing. [00:17:40] Dan Spellman: Yeah. [00:17:41] Kim Daly: This was a seed that you planted a few months ago? Correct. [00:17:44] Dan Spellman: So this was an interesting one. This guy owns another apartment complex and he had a bunch of blinds, horizontal blinds that were broken, and he asked me if I could fix them because that's one of the things we do. So I went in and fixed a couple and replaced a couple. And he loved the process that he didn't have to be there babysitting me, that when I was done I could call him for a credit card and we were clean and the people who lived there were happy with what happened. And he just continued to call me for those kind of jobs. And then down the street I recognized that he was building something. So I went in and found him and he said, yeah, Dan, this is, this is going to be a condo complex. We're going to have you quote this job and when it comes up, and that was like a year ago. So it's been a process, but that's a big job and it's. I know, it's my job. I just have to give him a quote again. [00:18:41] Kim Daly: So good. It's all about planting the seeds. So even before you came to the Z suite, you were planting seeds out there. You just maybe didn't have the belief that the seeds you were planting would be become anything in the future like you do now. Like when you're planting seeds now with the new. Why wouldn't they pick me? Do you think that's having an impact? [00:19:03] Dan Spellman: Yeah, it's having an impact. And you know, I was planting seeds, but maybe not with the intention. Like I was planting seeds because I was trying to outwork it. You know what I mean? And now I'm planting seeds knowing that, you know, something good is going to come from this. I don't Know when, but something good is going to come from this. [00:19:28] Kim Daly: And that shift is the shift for the listener out there. The whole question in franchising, how did two franchisees invest in the same business, same process, same system, same everything and create two different results? How does it happen? Right, because how does the same franchisee, let's go there, create two very different realities in the same business with the same systems following the same process? Right, because he has fundamentally changed the way he thinks and that changes the way he shows up to people and that changes the energy exchange when he's talking to people. And that shift is the shift. That's the shift that changes everything. So the vast majority of people listening out there who own a franchise who believe they're not enough or their franchisor isn't enough, or the marketing doesn't work, or the technology doesn't work, or the territory isn't enough, More than likely, 99.9% of the time, you don't need anything external to you to be any different for you to get every single thing you want. This is what we study in the Z suite. This is what we all live in the Z suite. This is what has changed dan Spellman's life 100%. [00:20:46] Dan Spellman: On my goals, on my goal sheet is, was to lose £25. Here we are £25 later. [00:20:55] Kim Daly: I mean that alone is life changing. Alone is life changing. [00:20:58] Dan Spellman: That alone is allows a 70 year old guy to walk up and down a 30 foot ladder numerous times. It hasn't gotten me a girlfriend yet though. [00:21:08] Kim Daly: I. Well, we're working on the girl. We're working on it, Dan. Okay, but so that you, you, you're that magnet and just needs to be on in the right place at the right time. And that woman's coming and she's coming hard and fast. I know it. So I, what, what I love about this is that again, when we call in growth in one area of our life, we don't have to compartmentalize that. Okay. I guess I have to put, you know, my health goals on, on the back burner while I'm over here. The reality is everything is going to benefit from the mindset shift that's driving the result. If you are showing up as old Dan Spellman who's just going to outwork it and grind and struggle and effort, then you're right. Everything has to be compartmentalized and your health will go down at the expense of building that business. But if you're using your true power, which is inside of every single one of us, that has a heartbeat. If you got a heartbeat, you've got, you've got the power. And if you start using that true power in you to lead from there, that's where it's effortless. Now, that doesn't mean no effort. The man's still working. Kim Daly's still working. All the franchisees in the Z Suite are working. But when you work, everything is easier. And the doors open. Doors that were closed are open. Magically deals he was quoting months ago just start to, to reappear. He now knows when he wakes up that the leads are coming, the business will be there and he's winning the jobs. Why is he doing anything fundamentally different in terms of quoting jobs than he was doing before? No, but the energy behind what he's doing is different. And that's the shift that changes everything. That's the story that I wanted this man to share with you because I want to continue to impress upon the entire franchising industry there's a missing link when you invest in a franchise. I know it. I've lived it for 24 years. I personally elevated, after eight years of being in kind of an average performing mindset to a history making legendary life for 13 years. And all during that time, I've listened to franchisees who were struggling and the same franchise, other franchisees who were not struggling. And I've watched franchisors scratch their heads why we're doing, you know, we're giving them the same process. We're telling them, follow the process. How many franchisees out there have heard, follow the process. And maybe you're scratching your head thinking, I am following the process. Why isn't it working? [00:23:54] Dan Spellman: That's why I bought a franchise, because [00:23:56] Kim Daly: the process was there, because there's a missing link. And that's you, the operator. [00:24:04] Dan Spellman: Yep. [00:24:05] Kim Daly: And the energy, which means the thoughts, the actions, the beliefs, the expectations, everything that you carry inside of you, that's where all of your results are actually [00:24:18] Dan Spellman: coming from, a hundred percent. [00:24:20] Kim Daly: If you zoom out, you've been part of the Z Suite now for six, seven months. So is there in kind of wrapping this up, Dan? Are there a couple of big takeaways? Are there things that you would look back at and go, ooh, that's when everything shifted for me. Like, I think I know when it was for you. But what do you think was the turning point from negative Dan to I can believe this and I can be positive? [00:24:52] Dan Spellman: Well, first of all, I was part of your. What was the three, the 90, the sweet deal? I was part of the sweet deal. And going through the sweet deal at various times you would say, you know, if you like this, then you can sign up and pay for more. So I paid. I said to myself, this is. I would never have invested this kind of money in this kind of thing in my past. That never would have happened. But because I spent a little time with you and started to do a little bit of work, I realized that I need to make this investment for me so that I can be a better Dan, a better grandfather, a better friend, a better mentor, a better all these things. So that's. First, the investment. You have to make the investment. But the investment is in yourself. [00:25:56] Kim Daly: Yes, but the financial investment. Has that paid off for you? [00:26:00] Dan Spellman: I mean, come on. It's ridiculous. It's ridiculous. The payback is like crazy. [00:26:09] Kim Daly: It can't be. Any investment we make in ourselves, in a program like the Z suite, can't ever really have an roi. The ROI is unlimited. Because when you, the things you've learned, the things you're now aware of, can you ever, like, unlearn them? [00:26:25] Dan Spellman: No. [00:26:27] Kim Daly: It's a forever, permanent change. It's a sustainable change. Yes, you can slip back, as we say in our human. But that's why you're connected to me for a year. Because we want to. We're going to build. We're going to create a new belief system and then we're going to repeat it and repeat it and repeat it and repeat it. We're going to beat it into you and I'm just kidding, we're going to keep that repetition going because that's how our subconscious mind changes. [00:26:51] Dan Spellman: I don't have to go away after a year, right? [00:26:54] Kim Daly: No, you can react. You can stay forever. The man who wasn't even sure this, this would ever work for him is saying, I'm not going away in a year. [00:27:04] Dan Spellman: So when, when it. I, you know, you asked, when it clicked for me, I don't know that I really, I don't know that I really know the, the real specific answer to it, to be honest. I think it's, it's been over time. It's, it's little by little. It's, you know, waking up in the morning, it's not beating myself up. It's congratulating my, you know, it's all these little things that kind of build your podium to stand on and say, here I am. [00:27:39] Kim Daly: I love that. I love that. And I, I would say in watching you, I think when you committed to going to the networking event and you overcame yourself to do that and you found a place where you could do that and start winning. For me, looking on the outside in, I would say that's what changed. So it wasn't about landing the big deal. It was about overcoming the deep inner beliefs you had about I'm not the guy or people aren't going to want to do business with me or whatever. And that's the self love shift. So the internal shift has to precede the external shift. Everybody in the world is looking at the bank account saying, where's the money? I own a business. Where's the money? But 99% of that energy exchange that leads to the money in the bank is the unseen work. That's the seed that the farmer has planted into the soil, that's germinating and building a root system before the, the plant pops through the earth and you physically see it. The bank, the money in the bank is the plant through the earth. But like, all that work is being done in the dark in the soil. And that's what I believe happened. I also agree with you though, that transformation, lasting transformation, is not a, you know, hit over the head one and done. That's not the way that our identity, our egoic mind allows us to change. It's small little shifts with persistence, persistence and consistency that you're just waking up every day reciting those new beliefs, putting on the identity of the new Dan every day, going out into the world, feeling differently, reacting differently, responding differently, really. And it's every single time you choose faith over fear, love over fear, gratitude over fear, possibility over fear. Every single time I use fear. But it's doubt, anxiety, all the other things too. But every single time you make that choice, the nervous system, the subconscious mind absorbs that and says, oh, this is who we're being now, and begins to trust you and make that the new norm. And as you stand in that new norm, that's when literally the doors fly open and the quantum leap financially, the quantum leap starts to happen. But all the other things have to happen in small little increments that create a safe environment for the big things to be let in. So I'm just standing here right now. I mean, this guy told me April was my biggest month. And then he came back in June. He was like, june was my biggest month. And we're right now in July. And I'm thinking, I don't think that we've hit your biggest month, Dan Spelman. I just can't wait to see what it is. But I have a feeling there's no [00:30:47] Dan Spellman: ceiling Can I say one more thing? Okay. You know, the shift is. I've. I know I've made the shift, but it becomes more and more visible to me. I. I belong to a b. A local BNI Group. Right. Business Network International. And it's a great referral source, and I love the people there. And the other, like, I think it was two weeks ago, I showed up to the meeting and the guy who is always kind of. I don't know, he's always kind of negative maybe, you know, and a little bit of a Humpty Dumpty kind of guy, and he said to me, dan, how you doing? And I said, I don't know if I could be doing any better. How are you? And he looked at me and he goes, really? And I said, yeah, why not? Right? And I didn't, like. Like, I didn't expect that kind of an interaction. You know what I mean? I didn't expect my words to have that kind of impact on him. I really didn't. But they did. [00:31:48] Kim Daly: And I was like a whole new energy. [00:31:50] Dan Spellman: Yeah. [00:31:51] Kim Daly: And people see it. I see it. I love it. I mean, I loved you before, but I really love you now because you're just standing in your full power and it's just so obvious, and I just can't wait to see, you know, what. What happens next. And I love. I'll just. We'll end on this. I love how, you know, there's some. Some challenges happening system wide, but the franchisor, may I say this, recently called and said, dan, what are you doing over there? Like, is. Your results are so good. And what was your answer? [00:32:20] Dan Spellman: Kim Daly. [00:32:21] Kim Daly: Hanging out with Kim Daly, baby. I love that answer. Love it, love it, love it. And I love you. Thank you so much for sharing your story. I.
